Among the 114 surahs of the Holy Qur’an, several carry the names of Allah’s noble Prophets: a lasting honour woven into the very structure of the Book.

These surahs remind us that the Qur’an is, in large part, the story of guidance sent across the ages through chosen messengers. Reflecting on them connects the reader to a single, unbroken chain of divine mercy.

Surahs named after Prophets

  • Surah Yunus (10): named after Prophet Jonah (a.s), whose story teaches hope and turning back to Allah.
  • Surah Hud (11): named after Prophet Hud (a.s), sent to the people of ‘Ad.
  • Surah Yusuf (12): the moving account of Prophet Joseph (a.s), called “the most beautiful of stories”.
  • Surah Ibrahim (14): named after Prophet Abraham (a.s), the friend of Allah.
  • Surah Nuh (71): named after Prophet Noah (a.s) and his long, patient call.
  • Surah Muhammad (47): named after the Seal of the Prophets (s).

Some scholars also note Surah Aal-e-Imran (the Family of ‘Imran) and Surah Maryam, which honour the family from which Prophets and the righteous arose.

Why these names matter

Naming a surah after a Prophet draws the reader’s heart toward that messenger’s example: their patience, sincerity and trust in Allah. As you learn to recite these surahs with Tajweed, their meanings open up, and recitation becomes reflection.

“Indeed in their stories there is a lesson for people of understanding.” (Surah Yusuf 12:111)

In our Tafseer and translation classes, students explore these stories verse by verse: discovering how each Prophet’s journey speaks to our own.
